"ITALIA PICTA IN LATVIA"
Osservando le opere del ciclo “Italia picta in Latvia” della pittrice lettone Ilze Jaunberga, ho subito pensato che l’artista ha dipinto ogni volta soltanto ciò che ha considerato necessario, sbarazzandosi di tutto il superfluo. Per non dipingere ciò che ha visto in Italia, ma ciò che ha provato in Italia. Dipingendo, quindi, per sottrazione: togliendo, limando, estirpando, semplificando. Per eliminare l’inessenziale e raffigurare sulla tela le sue più intime reazioni godute ed elaborate durante i suoi numerosi soggiorni italiani …: ciò che le è apparso (e come) nel momento in cui lo ha prelevato e memorizzato con la sua fotocamera.
En réflechissant sur les oeuvres du cycle "Italia picta in Latvia" du peintre léttonien Ilze Jaunberga, j'ai tout de suite pensé que l'artiste n'a peint que ce qui était nécessaire ą chaque fois, en se débarassant de tout ce qui était superflu. Pour ne pas peindre ce qu'elle a vu en Italie, mais au contraire ce qu'elle a éprouvé. Elle peind par soustraction. En enlevant, en polissant, en estirpant, en simplifiant. Pour effacer le non-essentiel et réprésenter sur toile ses réactions les plus intimes, jouies et élaborées pendant ses nombreux séjours italiens... Ce qui lui a paru (et comment) dans le moment oł elle l'a prélevé et mémorisé avec sa caméra.
Looking at the works of the “Italia picta in Latvia” cycle painted by the Latvian artist Ilze Jaunberga, it struck me that in each one she only painted what she considered necessary, getting rid of everything superfluous. This in order to paint not what she saw in Italy but the sensations she experienced in Italy. They are painted, then, by subtraction: taking away, filing off, weeding out and simplifying. All to remove what is not essential and to portray on canvas her most private reactions to what she experienced and enjoyed during her many visits to Italy...: what she saw (and how she saw it) in the instant when she captured and memorised it on her digital camera.
